How I Eliminated Toxic Fragrances and Chemicals From my Home
800 547 Jenni

Guest post, by Lori Logue

When I clean house, I love the scents of pine and lemon or clove and cinnamon. My home smells delicious!

In the past, I burned scented candles or popular wax candles to get that inviting scent. Sometimes. I’d start to feel a little sick or friends would come over and get headaches within a few minutes. One friend admitted that she couldn’t come over because the artificial smell triggered her allergies.

I started researching the effects of burning scented candles and learning about the ingredients. I was pretty mad at myself. As that mom who tries to keep her family healthy, I was sending toxins into the air of my home. Ughh!

It was about this time when I bought a diffuser and started researching the essential oils that cleaned the air and actually reduced the bad junk we were breathing.

Now, my diffuser runs constantly with cinnamon and orange or maybe I’ll add some melaleuca or doTERRA Breathe blend if I feel congested from seasonal allergies. It’s fun and there is no guilt when I crank up the diffuser and send those incredible scents throughout my home.

That was step one in my journey, and once I bought my book on the things oils can do, I was pretty hooked.

While I could write for days on the lifestyle changes we have made, one other significant way we use oils in my home is for cleaning.

I love the smell of lemon furniture polish, but I read an article about how toxic that is to your skin. One chore I give my kids is to dust the furniture. Again, the mom in me cringed when I realized that I could be harming my children form this simple chore.

I did a quick search for oils that are great to clean with and my good old standby, lemon, popped right up. I simply added an equal mixture of olive oil and vinegar into a glass spray bottle. Then, I put about 10 to 15 drops of my lemon oil into that and stirred it around. It was so simple and it’s easy to make more whenever I need it. My kids love helping and making their own sprays too.

My daughter even made a nightly spray for her baby brother and labeled it Monster Spray. She just added some lavender and water to one of our glass bottles and it’s totally safe for them to spray on pillows or in the air. It’s an added blessing for sweet dreams and a fresh-scented bedroom.

Having a clean home doesn’t just mean sweeping and mopping. It is so important to think about what we are cleaning with and what we are breathing in or putting on our skin.

Like with any change, it’s good to start small and manage one task at a time. We shouldn’t overwhelm ourselves by doing more than we can handle at once. It will all start to click as we feel better and realize that it is all just getting back to the basics.

Hi! My name is Lori Logue.  I am a full-time REALTOR, mom of 3 incredible kids, homeschool  mom, and wife to an amazing man! I am also a doTERRA wellness advocate and have been a lover of essential oils for almost three years.  My family and I  have changed our lifestyle so much in the last few years, and I am happy to share our experiences with you!

Essential Oils For Head Lice
800 547 Jenni

A few weeks ago my 11 year old daughter pointed out an itchy spot on the side of her head. I assumed it was a mosquito bite, and had her apply some Correct X to relief the itch. The next day she brought me a small bug she found in her hair. LICE!

My daughter had lice.

My 11 year is the youngest of our four children and this was our first experience with these pesky little bugs. It is important to note that head lice can happen to anyone, no matter how clean the person or how clean the house. We homeschool and interaction with other children is limited to church and the dance studio. After calling the dance studio I found out that 3 other girls also reported lice. My daughter picked up her annoying little hitchhikers at tumbling.

Some helpful facts about head lice from the CDC website:

  • Head lice do not spread disease.
  • They move by crawling, they do not fly or hop.
  • Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice.
  • It takes 8-9 days for the head lice nits to hatch.
  • Nymphs mature into adults in about 8-12 days.
  • An adult louse can live for 30 days on a human’s head.
  • The species of lice which live on humans can not live on our pets and vice versa.

I’m sorry. Is this making your head itch?

There are many different recipes for natural lice treatment, some using vinegar, vodka, coconut oil, olive oil, but one thing is consistent – Melaleuca.

Coconut and Essential oil treatment:

1 cup coconut oil

5 drops melaleuca

4 drops thyme

2 drops lavender

2 drops geranium

I worked this mixture through all 4 of my kids hair and my own. My 11 year old was the only one with lice, but I was being thorough. Nothing will make your own head start to feel itchy like pulling lice out of your very snuggly, loves-to-give-hugs little girl.

My plan was to keep the mixture in her hair over night then comb through her hair in the morning. But she was anxious to wash her hair. After 2 hours she washed her hair and while her hair was still wet and using a lice comb I carefully worked through her hair washing the comb out in a bowl of water. There were only 3 adult lice, but several nymphs floating in the water. I think we caught this early.

After combing her hair out I sprayed her hair with a lice repellant spray.
Lice Repellant Spray

4 ounce glass spray bottle

20 drops melaleuca

10 drops Eucalyptus

10 drops lavender

Fill with water. Shake before each use.

I washed all bedding, sprayed her stuffed animals with the Repellant Spray and put them in sealed plastics bags for 5 days and vacuumed my house.

The next day (day 2) I applied the coconut/essential oil mixture and wet combed again. No adults and less nymphs. I sprayed her hair at least 3 times that day.

Day 3-  I sprayed her hair and wet combed and couldn’t see anything.

Days 4-6-  I sprayed and looked carefully through her hair.

Day 7-  I sprayed and wet combed again but found nothing.

I added melaleuca and rosemary essential oils to our bottle of shampoo as a preventative measure.

It has now been two weeks and we have no recurrence of head lice. I am using a little more caution now. Some of my steps going forward are:

  • Adding oils to our shampoo.
  • Spaying the kids with the Repellant Spray before dance or other activities.
  • Not allowing my kids to try on any halloween masks/hats at the store.

Other Essential Oils For Lice Prevention/Treatment:

This was my first experience with lice as an adult. I remember having lice once as a child. How does my experience compare to when your kids had lice? What did you use? Did you try any natural products? I would love to hear your story.

How Immortelle Strengthened My Eye Sight!
800 543 Jenni

A while back I read that using Immortelle around your eyes could help your eyesight. So I decided to give it a try.
In July (2013) I had my eyes examined. My reading prescription was the worst it has been in the last 10 years and looking back at my previous prescriptions, it was getting bad fast. I had been using Immortelle essential oil blend on my face a few times a week but decided to step it up and be more consistent to give this personal challenge a better chance. So I used Immortelle on my face twice a day, morning and evening after washing my face. I used it sparingly as directed, didn’t put it too close to my eyes but also focused on a few dark spots on my check. I used a little more then one 10 ml roller bottle during that year period.

July of 2014 I noticed that my reading contact was not right and that I was due for an eye exam. I’m so glad to say that my prescription did change, from +1.75 to +1.25! I asked my doctor why or how this happens. I honestly don’t think he gave me a direct answer other then “it happens more often then you think”, but he couldn’t give me an example of how often. He also said it does happen and that your diet can affect your eyesight. I do also take dōTERRA’s Life Long Vitality pack daily (dōTERRA’s supplements). When I went to fill my prescription I asked how often they come across someone’s prescription that has improved instead of getting worse. She said she couldn’t recall the last time that has happened.

I have also received comments on how my skin looks more often. Initially that’s what I was going for but the improved eyesight is a bonus, a very big bonus! My eyesight and skin aren’t perfect but I’m so grateful that I have dōTERRA essential oils for me and my family.

Health Conscious Parents feel at Home with dōTERRA
800 547 Jenni

Brad and Dawna Toews were forced to become health-conscious parents when their six year-old son was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that attacked his kidneys. Not only were they forced to think about the health of their child, but they also became more aware of their own health, and the wellbeing of their other children.

There are over 80 different types of autoimmune diseases, some of the most common being Lupus, Type 1 diabetes, and MS [1]. Though this experience was frightening, their son overcame his autoimmune disease, and Brad and Dawna remained committed to protecting their family’s health.

As a health-conscious couple, doTERRA® grabbed the Toewses attention from the get-go. They had used essential oils before, but when they were first introduced to doTERRA, they noticed a level of quality in the products that they hadn’t seen before. As Dawna learned about the science behind essential oils, she became more intrigued. At the time, she was a health coach so the transition into the doTERRA business came naturally to her, and she was very enthusiastic from the beginning.

Brad was hesitant at first, but once he started to see the progress and money that Dawna was making after only a few months, he started coming around to the idea. Dawna says that Diamond was her goal from day one, and this thought drove her to work hard. She tries to remind others that doTERRA is not a “get rich quick” business and that it’s necessary to work hard, especially in the beginning. “You won’t get that residual income and time freedom in the very first month. You have to work hard for what you want, and the rewards will meet you.”

With Dawna’s experience as a health coach and their focus on family health, she and Brad try to take an educational approach to their business, rather than straight selling. Dawna points out that selling is deeply embedded in Western culture, so it is hard for people to imagine just sharing rather than selling. She says, “This is about educating people and helping them to step out of that small little box that our culture has created for us.”

Along with educating people, the Teowses believe that sharing their personal doTERRA journey with others makes a big difference when it comes to making connections. Sharing their story (and the stories of others) is a powerful tool that Dawna and Brad recommend to other Wellness Advocates who are looking to make connections with potential clients.

Their desire to maintain a healthy family made Brad and Dawna prime candidates for succeeding with doTERRA. Brad says, “doTERRA has become a platform for us to move forward in the things that we were already passionate about. It was a natural fit, since we wanted to help, educate, and really empower people. doTERRA certainly endorses a foundation of good health—something that was close to our heart.”

Saving My Fur Baby Boxer Puppies From Parvo
800 547 Jenni

Hi my name is Brook I am Jenni’s personal assistant.  This is my story about saving my boxer puppies.

On Saturday February 4th I woke up to the sound of one of my 3 month old Boxer puppies, Buddah, gagging and vomiting.  My first thought was he got into something, as puppies tend to do.  I took all 4 of my dogs down stairs to feed them breakfast and noticed little Buddah sitting at the edge of the kitchen floor just watching the other 3 dogs run circles while I prepared their bowls.  I knew something was not right normally Buddah and his brother Spliff are right under my feet acting as though they are starving to death trying to get at the bowls before I even set them down.

I tried calling him over and even taking his food to him but he wanted nothing to do with it!  He looked like he didn’t feel good at all.  Buddah went and laid down by the TV as I moved on to preparing my breakfast and then there was that sound again, the gagging and vomiting 🙁  Over the course of the next hour it happened 3 more times.  At this point I was becoming very concerned do to the fact that all he was throwing up was small amounts of clear liquid and white foam so it was apparent he had not gotten in to anything food or trash wise that was upsetting his stomach.

I knew from experience how to check for dehydration and shock in puppies so I checked him for both and so far so good.  I decided to go and grab the sample bottle of DigestZen that my boss had given me the week previous and give it a shot on my poor little fur baby.  I dropped about 6-7 drops of carrier oil in my hand and about 2-3 of the DigestZen and rubbed it on his little belly.  It seemed to help the vomiting stopped for a few hours.  He was still very inactive and obviously not feeling well but he wasn’t throwing up anymore!  I continued to apply the diluted DigestZen on his belly every few hours through out Saturday learning how long it was lasting by when he would throw up again and adjusting my application times to every 2-3 hours.  I continued to check his hydration and color multiple times through out the day and he looked great until late that night.

I had tickets to a play my friend and her kids were in so I was gone for a few hours, after returning home my little Buddah wasn’t looking as great at all.  He still was not showing signs of shock but he was showing the starting signs of dehydration so I ran to the store and bought some pedia lite, came home put a little in a bowl but he would not drink it so I decided to syringe it into his mouth. I put some of the diluted DigestZen on his belly and then slowly gave him about 5mL of pedia lite through the syringe in his mouth.

It is important to note I did not force it down his throat, puppies can very easily take fluid into their lungs if they don’t swallow it correctly, so I just would squirt a little in the side of his mouth triggering him to start lapping it in his mouth with his tongue.  I continued through the night with the DigestZen and small amounts of pedia lite every few hours till morning.  I was terrified I didn’t sleep I spent hours on my phone googling what could be wrong with him!  Parvo did not seem like an option to me due to the fact that he received his first round of shots on December 19th with all his brothers and sisters, I was always told once they got that first Parvo vaccine they were in the clear.

Sunday morning out from under my bed where he was hiding emerged a much happier, energetic and pinker little nose Buddah.  We went downstairs where he still wasn’t as interested in his own bowl of food but did take about 4 small bites out of his moms bowl of dry food!  It was an improvement and a relief, he was even playing with his brother off and on.  I continued with the DigestZen and pedia lite through Sunday, I noticed Sunday night he was looking very skinny like drastically skinny so I decided to try some plain white rice.

At first he didn’t seem interested but as long as I took a pinch at a time and held it in my palm for him he would eat it, he eat maybe a small hand full.

Monday morning Buddah was not looking to great again he looked pale and weak so I decided it was time to go to the vet I made an appointment for after I got off work.  When I got to work that morning I was telling my boss about our long weekend and she told me to call my kids and have them start rubbing a blend of the On Guard and Oregano samples she had given me mixed with the carrier oil on the bottoms of the puppies paws.  I instructed the kids on how to do it, had them continue the DigestZen rub on his belly along with the pedia lite doses and had them rub olive oil on his ears and belly to help with nutrition.

When We got to the vet office that afternoon they told me they were treating it like Parvo and we had to wait in the car while they ran the test, to my absolute horror they came out and it was Parvo.  We had to wait till all animals were out of the office and then they brought us in for an exam.

While the vet was examining Buddah they proceeded to tell me about how puppies with Parvo they recommend hospitalization for intervenes fluids.  I did not have the money for hospitalization I barely had the money for the visit but I was going to do whatever I had to to save my fur baby.  Halfway through the exam the vet tells me that Buddahs intestines feel fine, no nots or flips, he is very well hydrated and more alert and active then she would of expected.

The vet told me she would not recommend hospitalization due to the fact that I had managed to do everything for him they would do on my own.  Sigh of relief!!  She gave me an anti nausea shot to take home if he needed it and told me to try scrambled eggs in small doses instead of rice  and to just keep him hydrated like I had.  Parvo kills most dogs in 48 to 72 hours from dehydration, we were at 60 hours and staying well hydrated.  We went home eat a little scrambled egg and continued with the oil blend on the paws and the DigestZen on the belly along with the pedia lite.  I began putting the oil blend on Buddah’s brother Sliff’s paws as well due to the fact that he had been exposed to Parvo as well.

Tuesday morning my puppy was back!  He had energy, a bright pink nose, he scarfed down half a bowl of food, he was drinking water on his own out of the bowl and running around like my crazy little puppy he was before Parvo, he was still very skinny but a total turn around!  We continued to treat both puppies with the oils over the next few days by Thursday Buddah was showing weight gain significantly and improving everyday.

Spliff started to vomit on Thursday, I knew it was coming just praying it wasn’t. We started the intensive oil treatments with pedia lite on Spliff and continued with the paw treatments on Buddah through Thursday night.  Friday morning Spliff seemed better happy more energy, I fed him some scrambled egg and continued with the oils and pedia lite.

When I returned from work Friday evening he was not doing as well as when I left that morning, he was very lethargic and we could not keep the vomiting under control as easily as we could with his brother.

Saturday was worse Spliff developed the horrible diarrhea that can come with Parvo and was throwing up everything I put in him, at this point I was getting very concerned!  I continued with the oils on the paws and diluted DigestZen on his belly, I even put a drop on my finger and would rub it on his tongue every few hours.  I made some chicken broth and continued trying small amounts of pedia lite and chicken broth every hour or 2 through out Saturday day and evening.  Spliff was getting very skinny, very weak and overall not looking well at all, he showed starting signs of dehydration so at this point I was giving 2.5Ml of pedia lite every hour or half hour if he didn’t throw up the previous dose.

Saturday night was a very long and stressful night, I was terrified he wasn’t going to make it!  I woke up 4 different times to find him not on my bed next to me, twice he was downstairs in my living room and twice he was just on my floor in my room but very weak and a little disoriented.

Sunday morning I knew we just needed to make it through the day and we would be past the 72 hour mark!  Sunday morning he seemed a little better he was interested in food so I made him a scrambled egg and he ate half of it, the pedia lite was going down smoother and the vomiting had stopped :).  Sunday afternoon he ate a whole scrambled egg and had small burst of energy to play here and there, but was still pretty clingy and cuddly.
Monday morning was the turning point, Spliff leaped out of bed ate his dog food, drank water from the bowl and was running around playing like the crazy little puppy he is!

Buddah is now a week out from the original onset of the Parvo and has gained all his weight back and is the hyper crazy puppy he was before, you would never guess he looked like death just 4 days ago.

Spliff is putting weight back on and is now a week and a half out from his onset of Parvo and doing great!  So happy to have my puppies back to normal and driving me crazy!

Three Tools I Use for Clear Breathing
640 426 Jenni

I’m so glad I have tools to regain clear breathing in my home and for my children. My daughter spent the night at a relative’s house a week and a half ago and came home not feeling or breathing well. It’s been going through our family and caused more problems in my baby and toddler. I am still getting over it myself.

Tool #1-Essential Oils. I’ve been rubbing an essential oil immune blend called On Guard, diluted with carrier oil, on their chests and necks (and I drink this in herbal tea too). This includes oils of orange, eucalyptus, rosemary, clove and cinnamon. I also used a respiratory essential oil blend called Breathe on their feet, which cuts gunk and helps them and me breathe much easier. It includes laurel leaf, peppermint, eucalyptus radiata, melaleuca, lemon, ravensara, and cardamom. I’ve also been drinking lemon essential oil in my water, which is gently cleansing and clearing. My reference guide suggests essential oils of thyme, marjoram and sandalwood, (diluted) so I’m rubbing my baby down with those too.

Tool #2-Elderberry syrup. I was giving my kids elderberry syrup every few hours to keep things at bay. Today I’ve been taking and administering elderberry syrup with yarrow and peppermint EVERY HOUR to my kids and myself to get rid of residual problems.

Tool #3-Humidifier. I pulled out my warm mist humidifier and ran it in my baby’s room with some respiratory essential oils in it. Last night I wished I had an extra one to run in my own room. I think I’m going to go get my diffuser out right now!

I’m so glad to have these tools that make our lives easier! When breastfeeding a baby, it’s good to do these remedies yourself because they will go through the breast milk and strengthen the baby.

When our kids sound awful and are really having trouble breathing, we wrap them in a blanket and take them outside into the cold air. This immediately helps them breathe easier as the cold air goes into the respiratory tract.

Kid-e-Well-200x300Other great tools include Dr. Christophers Kid-E-Well, echinacea, and other herbal formulas for immune support.

To your home wellness empowerment!

My Toddler Almost Choked to Death
800 610 Jenni

I had the scare of my life at the end of 2013, and it gave me a greater appreciation of each moment I have with my children. My youngest son was a toddler at the time, and he almost choked to death on a bouncy ball. I published this story in my book Trust Your Intuition, but now I’m going to share it with my readers here on this blog.

I had just arrived home from dropping 2 kids at birthday parties. It was 7 PM, my son had prepared some dinner, but nobody had eaten yet. I scooped up my smiling toddler, Ian, walked straight to the pot of food (our healthy version of mac & cheese) and gave him a big bite. He chewed for a moment, then started choking.

He had eaten a big bite or possibly two in a row, so I just thought he hadn’t chewed it enough. I moved to the sink, draped him over my arm and tried to do the Heimlich manuver. He didn’t cough anything out and wasn’t breathing well. His eyes started fluttering and that’s when I knew something was really wrong.

I yelled to my 15 year-old boyscout son to come quick and continue doing the Heimlich while I called 911. They told me they were sending paramedics and continued to ask me for details. My older son had been unsuccessful in helping Ian, so I took him back and by this time, he was limp in my arms. He was semi-conscious, he wasn’t turning blue. I held him very still and could hear that he was barely breathing.

My husband is an ER doctor and probably could have resolved the problem in seconds, but he was working 45 minutes away at the time. My son called our neighbor, who is a paramedic, but he didn’t answer immediately. I hung up with 911 so I could go see if anyone was coming who could help. I was still trying to do the Heimlich and talk to my baby to keep him fighting. He was definitely struggling greatly to breathe.

My son had been unable to reach any neighbors by phone. He was so scared and frustrated that he ran out to the street and started yelling for help. We live on 2 acre lots, so there is a bit of space between the homes in our neighborhood. But our next-door neighbors heard him and came to help. They couldn’t do much, but it was a comfort to have them.

Luckily, it didn’t take that long for the paramedics to arrive. They had already been called out for something else, and were only 5 minutes from our house instead of across town. I told them I thought he had food in his throat and needed a suction. They quickly tried to suction him, but nothing was coming out. I was trying desperately to keep Ian coherent. They put a monitor on him and could tell he was getting a little oxygen. They tried to give him some through a mask, but it wasn’t helping.

The paramedic then put some instrument down Ian’s throat. I thought he was trying to see in, which he probably was. The next thing I knew, he had pulled a little bouncy ball out of Ian’s throat and was holding it in front of my face. Relief washed over me. Even though my baby Ian was still semi-conscious, I knew he would be okay.

At that point, Ian had been struggling hard to breathe for about 15 minutes. Something came to my mind that I had learned from a recent class about how essential oils can help get oxygen into the body. I immediately ran to my storage case of oils on my kitchen counter. I grabbed peppermint, frankincense and doTERRA’s grounding blend called Balance. I rubbed a few drops of each on the bottom’s of his feet and chest. One of the paramedics commented after a few minutes, that the oils seemed to be helping increase Ian’s oxygen levels.

My paramedic neighbor arrived ready to help, and was happy to see that the main problem had been resolved. We decided to take Ian to the hospital in the ambulance so he could get stabilized with extra oxygen and get checked out to make sure he was fine. Before we loaded him, I asked my neighbor, who is a member of my church, to give him a blessing. He did so, and between the essential oils and that blessing, I was completely comforted and calmed.

On the way to the hospital, Ian started responding again. They pricked him for something and he cried, which was good.

I looked at my older son, and he acted as if he might loose his emotional control. I had a key chain on my purse which holds essential oils, so I handed him doTERRA’s calming blend called Serenity. He just sat in the ambulance and smelled it for a few minutes and then was fine.

At the hospital they did a chest x-ray, and could tell that Ian’s lungs had taken a beating. They said his oxygen levels were pretty stable though. I had some of doTERRA’s respiratory blend of essential oils called Breathe in my key chain as well. I carry small, sample size bottles that usually have a dropper piece, but that one didn’t. So when I went to apply a drop to Ian’s foot, I dumped out the whole thing onto the hospital bed. It was fine because then he could just breathe in the healing, strengthening aroma.14045447_10154178443958880_620621659_o

I realized that it was 8:30 or 9 PM by then, and Ian hadn’t eaten anything for awhile. I asked for something and got apple juice and graham crackers. After Ian ate and drank, he perked up much more and started laughing and playing. He seemed to be getting back to normal.

A respiratory therapist came in to give Ian a treatment. The treatment uses steroids to reduce inflammation. I generally try to avoid them, but in an emergency, I would definitely use them. I just wasn’t sure they were really necessary by that point. The nurse had commented that Ian’s oxygen was good, so I asked the respiratory therapist if he thought it was good. He said yes. I told him I didn’t want the treatment then. He said okay and walked out.

The ER doctor, who was a personal friend, said he was a little worried about Ian, and normally might keep him overnight to make sure he did okay. I was so happy that he just kept us there an extra hour and then let us go home.

Because we have a high deductible insurance, I had to pay the hospital before we left. It was $1700 , $100 for the radiologist fee for looking at the x-ray and $1600 for the ambulance ride (which was billed to us later). I was doubly glad then that I had declined the respiratory treatment.

When we arrived home, I pulled some of Dr. Christopher’s Respiratory Massage oil out of my natural remedy cupboard and used it to dilute more essential oils for Ian before putting him to bed. We checked on him that night and he was fine and showed no signs the next day that anything had happened.

As I reflect on this experience, my feelings and gratitude about a few things are solidified. I am so thankful for caring and well-trained rescue teams, nurses and doctors who save and improve lives. I’m also thankful for the technology that helps them with crisis management. This is where conventional medicine shines and I consider it to be a great blessing that we have it.

I am also grateful for natural tools that can increase our wellness, sometimes preventing crisis, and often healing and strengthening after a crisis. Synthetic drugs can help greatly during a crisis. They can manage problems, but because they are made from isolated, unnatural compounds, they often carry negative side effects. They almost never heal, balance, strengthen or nourish the body.

Natural tools like herbs, essential oils and even whole foods do nourish, strengthen, balance and heal the body in many different ways. Whole foods should be at the foundation of our health if we want our health to be good. Natural solutions most optimally should be used for fine tuning, wellness and comfort. But these tools are powerful enough to heal and manage many illnesses, when used correctly. Their regular use can often prevent situations from ever getting to crisis point.

My little boy is almost 6 now, and doing great! I’m so glad for the capable help we received, and the natural tools in our home!
