Saving My Fur Baby Boxer Puppies From Parvo

Hi my name is Brook I am Jenni’s personal assistant. This is my story about saving my fur baby boxer puppies from Parvo.

On Saturday February 4th I woke up to the sound of one of my 3 month old Boxer puppies, Buddah, gagging and vomiting.  My first thought was he got into something, as puppies tend to do. I took all 4 of my dogs down stairs to feed them breakfast. And i noticed little Buddah sitting at the edge of the kitchen floor, just watching the other 3 dogs run circles while I prepared their bowls. I knew something was not right normally Buddah and his brother Spliff are right under my feet. And acting as though they are starving to death. Trying to get at the bowls before I even set them down.

I tried calling him over and even taking his food to him. But he wanted nothing to do with it! He looked like he didn’t feel good at all. Buddah went and laid down by the TV as I moved on to preparing my breakfast. Then there was that sound again, the gagging and vomiting 🙁  Over the course of the next hour it happened 3 more times.  At this point, I was becoming very concerned. Due to the fact that all he was throwing up was small amounts of clear liquid and white foam. So it was apparent he had not gotten in to anything food or trash wise that was upsetting his stomach.

First Aid With An Essential Oil

I knew from experience how to check for dehydration and shock in puppies. I checked him for both and so far so good.  So, I decided to go and grab the sample bottle of digestive essential oils that my boss had given me the week previous. And give it a shot on my poor little fur baby. I dropped about 6-7 drops of carrier oil in my hand, about 2-3 of the digest oils and rubbed it on his little belly. It seemed to help the vomiting stopped for a few hours.

He was still very inactive and obviously not feeling well but he wasn’t throwing up anymore!  I continued to apply the diluted digest oils on his belly every few hours through out Saturday. Learning how long it was lasting by when he would throw up again and adjusting my application times to every 2-3 hours.  I continued to check his hydration and color multiple times throughout the day and he looked great until late that night.

No Signs of Shock

I had tickets to a play my friend and her kids were in so I was gone for a few hours. After returning home my little Buddah wasn’t looking as great at all. He still was not showing signs of shock. But he was showing the starting signs of dehydration so I ran to the store and bought some pedialyte. I came home put a little in a bowl but he would not drink it so I decided to syringe it into his mouth. I put some of the diluted digest oils on his belly. And then slowly gave him about 5mL of pedia lite through the syringe in his mouth.

It is important to note I did not force it down his throat. Puppies can very easily take fluid into their lungs if they don’t swallow it correctly. So I just would squirt a little in the side of his mouth triggering him to start lapping it in his mouth with his tongue. I continued through the night with the digestion oils and small amounts of pedialite every few hours till morning. I was terrified I didn’t sleep I spent hours on my phone googling what could be wrong with him! Parvo did not seem like an option to me due to the fact that he received his first round of shots on December 19th with all his brothers and sisters. And I was always told once they got that first Parvo vaccine they were in the clear.

Another Day Came

Sunday morning out from under my bed where he was hiding emerged a much happier, energetic and pinker little nose Buddah. We went downstairs where he still wasn’t as interested in his own bowl of food. But did take about 4 small bites out of his moms bowl of dry food!  It was an improvement and a relief, he was even playing with his brother off and on. I continued with the digest oils and pedialyte through Sunday And I noticed Sunday night he was looking very skinny like drastically skinny so I decided to try some plain white rice.

At first he didn’t seem interested but as long as I took a pinch at a time and held it in my palm for him he would eat it, he eat maybe a small hand full.

Monday morning Buddah was not looking to great again he looked pale and weak so I decided it was time to go to the vet I made an appointment for after I got off work.  When I got to work that morning I was telling my boss about our long weekend and she told me to call my kids and have them start rubbing a blend of protective essential oils and oregano samples she had given me mixed with the carrier oil on the bottoms of the puppies paws.  I instructed the kids on how to do it, had them continue the digestion oils rubbed on his belly along with the pedialyte doses and had them rub olive oil on his ears and belly to help with nutrition.

Seeking Professional Help

When we got to the vet office that afternoon they told me they were treating it like Parvo. And we had to wait in the car while they ran the test, to my absolute horror they came out and it was Parvo. We had to wait till all animals were out of the office and then they brought us in for an exam.

While the vet was examining Buddah they proceeded to tell me about how puppies with Parvo they recommend hospitalization for intravenous fluids. I did not have the money for hospitalization. I barely had the money for the visit but I was going to do whatever I had to to save my fur baby. Halfway through the exam the vet tells me that Buddah’s intestines feel fine, no nots or flips. He is very well hydrated and more alert and active then she would of expected.

No Hospitalization Needed

The vet told me she would not recommend hospitalization due to the fact that I had managed to do everything for him they would do on my own.  Sigh of relief!!  She gave me an anti nausea shot to take home if he needed it. And told me to try scrambled eggs in small doses instead of rice  and to just keep him hydrated like I had. Parvo kills most dogs in 48 to 72 hours from dehydration, we were at 60 hours and staying well hydrated. We went home eat a little scrambled egg and continued with the oil blend on the paws and the digestion oils on the belly along with the pedialyte. I began putting the oil blend on Buddah’s brother Spliff’s paws as well. Due to the fact that he had been exposed to Parvo as well.

Tuesday morning my puppy was back! I’m so happy for saving my fur baby boxer puppies from Parvo. He had energy, a bright pink nose, he scarfed down half a bowl of food. And he was drinking water on his own out of the bowl and running around like my crazy little puppy he was before Parvo. He was still very skinny though but a total turn around! So, we continued to treat both puppies with the oils over the next few days. By Thursday Buddah was showing weight gain significantly and improving everyday.

Another Baby Boxer Puppy Suffering From Parvo

Spliff started to vomit on Thursday. And I knew it was coming just praying it wasn’t. We started the intensive oil treatments with pedialyte on Spliff. And continued with the paw treatments on Buddah through Thursday night. Came Friday morning, Spliff seemed better happy more energy. So, I fed him some scrambled egg and continued with the oils and pedialyte.

When I returned from work Friday evening he was not doing as well as when I left that morning. He was very lethargic and we could not keep the vomiting under control as easily as we could with his brother.

Saturday was worse Spliff developed the horrible diarrhea that can come with Parvo and was throwing up everything I put in him. At this point I was getting very concerned!  I continued with the oils on the paws and diluted digestion oils on his belly. And I even put a drop on my finger and would rub it on his tongue every few hours. I made some chicken broth and continued trying small amounts of pedialyte and chicken broth every hour or 2 through out Saturday day and evening. Spliff was getting very skinny, very weak and overall not looking well at all. He showed starting signs of dehydration. So at this point I was giving 2.5 Ml of pedialyte every hour or half hour if he didn’t throw up the previous dose.

Saturday night was a very long and stressful night. I was terrified he wasn’t going to make it! I woke up 4 different times to find him not on my bed next to me, twice he was downstairs in my living room. And twice he was just on my floor in my room but very weak and a little disoriented.

Road to Recovery

Sunday morning I knew we just needed to make it through the day and we would be past the 72 hour mark!  Sunday morning he seemed a little better. He was interested in food so I made him a scrambled egg and he ate half of it. The pedialyte was going down smoother and the vomiting had stopped :). Sunday afternoon he ate a whole scrambled egg and had small burst of energy to play here and there. But was still pretty clingy and cuddly. Monday morning was the turning point. Spliff leaped out of bed ate his dog food. He drank water from the bowl and was running around playing like the crazy little puppy he is! I can’t imagine saving my fur baby boxer puppies from Parvo!

Buddah is now a week out from the original onset of the Parvo. And has gained all his weight back. The hyper crazy puppy he was before, you would never guess he looked like death just 4 days ago.

Spliff is putting weight back on. And is now a week and a half out from his onset of Parvo. He’s been doing great! Saving My Fur Baby Boxer Puppies From Parvo is great relief for me. So happy to have my puppies back to normal and driving me crazy!

HI…. Would you please explain this a little more? “THE ONGUARD AND OREGANO NEED TO BE DILUTED A LOT”… how?
“THE DIGESTZEN ALSO NEEDS TO BE DILUTED WITH CARRIER OIL”… what is CARRIER OIL and where can I purchase it from? I had 2 puppies die of parvo and my 3rd puppy just began with the symptoms last night…😭… please help… thanks in advance!

    • Jenni says:

Hi Andrea, the way to dilute the oils is mix one or two drops with 1 tsp coconut or vegetable oil. Carrier oil is any vegetable or nut oil like coconut, olive, avocado, almond, jojoba, etc. I’m sorry I didn’t see your comment sooner. I hope your dogs do okay. You can always use my contact form if you need more help.

Hello – I used the antibiotic from the vet and after having one of those horrible saline bags injected into the back of my puppy (I had no idea they were going to do that or would not have had that done) I decided we were not going to do that again and surfed the web for hours until I heard about activated charcoal – we to the drugstore and got the capsules – emptied several in 2 ounces of water – syringed it into my pup’s cheeks and with in 14 minutes he wanted to have water and food on his own. I love that stuff!! We just celebrated having Buster in our lives for 5 years now after finding him in the desert and bringing him into our lives.

    • Jenni says:

That’s great that the activated charcoal worked so well, and that your puppy is okay! I know it can work miracles sometimes. Thanks for sharing, Linda!

  3. Elishab says:

Hello what is the ratio of digest zen and oregano my puppy is dying will try anything

  4. Erica says:

Hello what kind of essential oils where did you purchase if you happen to know and what were the steps you took to help your pup get better . My pup is showing first symptoms of parvo

    • Jenni says:

      Hi Erica,

The oil blends are from doTERRA. The OnGuard and Oregano need to be diluted a lot and applied to the paws every couple hours. The Digestzen also needs to be diluted with carrier oil and applied to the stomach area every couple hours. We can help you order if you email me at [email protected]

  5. Jenni says:

I think CBD oil can be very useful and helpful in many cases, but I am not an expert on it and though there is research on it, there is not a lot which is standardized for use with dogs. I think there is potential, but I would personally choose essential oils for those issues, because I know that they work and how they work.
